International standards for information literacy
Librarians working in higher education want to support students in the pursuit of their academic work, based on the good use of information. To this
end, they need to know the emerging pedagogical changes that they can
take advantage of when designing their courses, integrating this knowledge
into a more segmented, clear, and objective training offer, based on international references, published in the last decades, since the ACRL Standards,
until the ACRL Framework. The attention given to these documents can
prepare librarians for the necessary updating of skills, supporting innovation, and best practice achievement. This paper aims to systematise the evolution of concepts and practices of information literacy guidelines in higher education and identify their inspiration for the creation of Portuguese
guidelines. An exploratory inventory of international information associations was carried out to identify information literacy guidelines. The content analysis of these guidelines allowed the identification of pedagogical
trends in the performance of libraries and their professionals. The analysed
contents show an interpretative evolution of the guidelines, converging in
the ACRL Framework and the contents of the Portuguese recommendations
for academic libraries for the period 2020–2022. It is evident that updating
skills for librarians requires not only an awareness of sector trends, but also
transforming them into good practice and recommendations appropriate
for the national context.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
University libraries fighting fake news: an analysis of the knowledge and practices of Portuguese librarians
Problems with fake news are an emerging subject that has been debated in many
sectors of society. Libraries are no exception, and particularly university libraries have been
taking a stand against this new reality and seeking to combat it, especially through information
literacy training programs. Several studies have already concluded that training that soaks
critical thinking in the use of information can benefit users; it enables them to strengthen their
strategies for distinguishing informational truth from fake news, misinformation, deceived, or
misleading information. Inspired by research carried out in Spain, this study seeks to
understand what knowledge Portuguese librarians have about this subject and what strategies
are being prepared or implemented by academic libraries in Portugal to combat fake news and
misinformation. For this purpose, a questionnaire is applied and addressed to the 172
Portuguese academic libraries registered in a national directory of libraries. The questionnaire
comprises data aggregated in four sections: library identification; characterization of
knowledge about the subject; good practices in the fight against fake news; and a final open
question. Seventy-three libraries answered, representing 43% of the universe under analysis.
The results show a thorough knowledge of the issue by librarians, but still incipient actions
regarding practices that directly address the fight against fake news, through information
literacy training.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Factor V Leiden and Prothrombin G20210A in Portuguese Women with Recurrent Miscarriage: Is it Worthwhile to Investigate?
OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of factor V Leiden (FVL) and prothrombin (PT) G20210A mutations in Portuguese women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage (RM) and a control group of parous women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: FVL and PT G20210A analysis were carried out in 100 women with three or more consecutive miscarriages and 100 controls with no history of pregnancy losses. Secondary analysis was made regarding gestational age at miscarriage (embryonic and fetal losses).
RESULTS: Overall, the prevalence of FVL and PT G20210A was similar in women with RM (5 and 3%) compared with controls (5 and 1%) OR 1.36 (CI 95% 0.45-4.08). In RM embryonic subgroup, PT G20210A was observed in 1.3% of women and FVL prevalence (2.6%) was inclusively lesser than that of controls. Both polymorphisms were more prevalent in women with fetal losses than in controls, although statistical significance was not reached due to the small size of the >10 weeks' subgroup.
CONCLUSION: These data indicate that neither FVL nor PT G20210A is associated with RM prior to 10 weeks of gestation. Therefore, its screening is not indicated as an initial approach in Portuguese women with embryonic RM and negative personal thromboembolic history
Clinical, Molecular Characterization and Long-Term Follow-Up of a Patient with Neonatal Severe Hyperparathyroidism
Heterozygous inactivating pathogenic variants of the calcium-sensing receptor encoding gene
cause autosomal dominant familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, whereas mutations that inactivate both
alleles cause neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism, a rare and potentially fatal disease. We present the clinical
and genetic characterization of a Portuguese family with familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia/neonatal severe
hyperparathyroidism as well as the long-term follow-up of the proband. The newborn was admitted due to
progressive hypotonia, feeding refusal, and dehydration. Serum calcium and parathormone levels were markedly increased. Radiological evaluation revealed osteopenia and several fractures. Total parathyroidectomy with the reimplantation of a quarter of one gland was performed. At 15 years old, she is clinically well, has normal calcium levels, and detectable parathormone values while under calcium and α-calcidiol treatment. Calcium-sensing receptor encoding gene sequencing revealed a germline homozygous nonsense pathogenic variant later confirmed as inherited.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Is It Possible to Simplify Risk Stratification Scores for Patients with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Primary Angioplasty?
INTRODUCTION: There are several risk scores for stratification of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most widely used of which are the TIMI and GRACE scores. However, these are complex and require several variables. The aim of this study was to obtain a reduced model with fewer variables and similar predictive and discriminative ability.
METHODS: We studied 607 patients (age 62 years, SD=13; 76% male) who were admitted with STEMI and underwent successful primary angioplasty. Our endpoints were all-cause in-hospital and 30-day mortality. Considering all variables from the TIMI and GRACE risk scores, multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to the data to identify the variables that best predicted death.
RESULTS: Compared to the TIMI score, the GRACE score had better predictive and discriminative performance for in-hospital mortality, with similar results for 30-day mortality. After data modeling, the variables with highest predictive ability were age, serum creatinine, heart failure and the occurrence of cardiac arrest. The new predictive model was compared with the GRACE risk score, after internal validation using 10-fold cross validation. A similar discriminative performance was obtained and some improvement was achieved in estimates of probabilities of death (increased for patients who died and decreased for those who did not).
CONCLUSION: It is possible to simplify risk stratification scores for STEMI and primary angioplasty using only four variables (age, serum creatinine, heart failure and cardiac arrest). This simplified model maintained a good predictive and discriminative performance for short-term mortality

Tolerogenic versus Inflammatory Activity of Peripheral Blood Monocytes and Dendritic Cells Subpopulations in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Abnormalities in monocytes and in peripheral blood dendritic cells (DC) subsets have been reported in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aim to clarify the tolerogenic or inflammatory role of these cells based on ICOSL or IFN-α and chemokine mRNA expression, respectively, after cell purification. The study included 18 SLE patients with active disease (ASLE), 25 with inactive disease (ISLE), and 30 healthy controls (HG). In purified plasmacytoid DC (pDC) was observed a lower ICOSL mRNA expression in ASLE and an increase in ISLE; similarly, a lower ICOSL mRNA expression in monocytes of ALSE patients was found. However, a higher ICOSL mRNA expression was observed in ASLE compared to HG in myeloid DCs. Interestingly, clinical parameters seem to be related with ICOSL mRNA expression. Regarding the inflammatory activity it was observed in purified monocytes and CD14(-/low) CD16(+) DCs an increase of CCL2, CXCL9, and CXCL10 mRNA expression in ASLE compared to HG. In myeloid DC no differences were observed regarding chemokines, and IFN-α mRNA expression. In pDC, a higher IFN-α mRNA expression was observed in ASLE. Deviations in ICOSL, chemokine, and IFN-α mRNA expression in peripheral blood monocytes and dendritic cells subpopulations in SLE appear to be related to disease activity
do braço longo.
cromossómicas distintas do caso índex, envolvendo igualmente o cromossoma 14.
Designation processes and semantic substitutions used by european portuguese children in a vocabulary test
This research study focus on the designation processes and semantic substitutions of each word on the vocabulary sub-task from the language test for children – ABFW, standardized in Brazil and adapted to European Portuguese, as well as the comparison of the results obtained in the two countries, to analyze the relevance of their extensibility to the Portuguese population. Methods: The test was applied to 150 children from 5 to 6 years old, of typical development. The test consists of 9 conceptual categories. Each category consists of different words, which were always assessed in the same sequential order. Results: The sample of this study showed a lower performance only in clothes, places and food semantic categories. All the other categories have outperformed the standard. The categories of vocabulary with higher percentage in the right designation of the words were colors and shapes, animals and toys and music instruments. The categories with a higher percentage of substitution processes, from the reference results, were: food and locations. The most recurrent substitution processes were the co-hyponym, words that designate semantic attributes, valorization of the visual stimulus, hypernym and parasynonyms Conclusion: Given the homogeneity of the results of this study with the results obtained with other studies in Brazil, this test reveal potentiality as an instrument for vocabulary assessment in Portugal.
Resultados: A amostra
Todas as outras categorias revelaram
desempenho superior.
e instrumentos musicais.
do estímulo visual, hiperônimos e parassinônimos. Conclusão: Dada a
This work is funded by CIEd – Research Centre on Education, projects UID/CED/1661/2013 and UID/CED/1661/2016, Institute of Education, University of Minho, through national funds of FCT/MCTESPT.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
